Let There Be
02:34
|
|||
The Lord said,
"Let there be
Marlboro lights,
Early Times in our coffee cup"
And He called it
Monday morning
He said no more
And He saw it was good enough

10 More Degrees
03:19
|
|||
Been at it all winter
But I know the spring
Rounding the corner
Will fix everything
All of this fighting
We push and provoke
Or try to keep peace
With spirit and smoke
It's not the chill in our words
It's the tilt of the Earth
That makes it easy to hurt you
I don't know why we can't winterize
A game we play so well in July
I think we must have been high, or maybe couldn't see
And it's all wrong until the temperatures rise
Won't be long till we can break the ice
All we need is 10 more degrees
This used to be easy
Or easy to fake
Skating around it
In drunk figure eights
But dishes explode
And blow snow around us
But there ain't any angels
In porcelain dust
It's not the chill in our words
It's the tilt of the Earth
That makes it easy to hurt you
I don't know why we can't winterize
When it's a clean fight in July
We float like butterflies, above the bees
But let's hold on until the temperatures rise
Won't be long till we can break the ice
All we need is 10 more degrees

What Can I Say?
03:46
|
|||
Basketballs are pounding on the leaves again
Dancing through the jukes of all my driveway friends
Days are ending much too soon
And here I am sending you
My last words of the year
Soon my snowy thoughts will lie in silent drifts
Permafrost mutations that would bore you stiff
And it'll the end of May
Before I find a turn of phrase
Worth sending to your ear
Oh oh oh
I know I grow quiet
Oh oh oh
I don't know why
But I know the day is gonna come
When the cat will get my tongue
You only hear what I don't say
But I don't mean it anyway
Twist my arm and pull my leg
There's a song stuck in my head
Cross my eyes when we're apart
Stick a needle in my heart
What can I say?
What can I say?
Then the ground will thaw and spring is in the air
And I'll have no excuse for why i'm standing there
With nothing to say for myself
My tongue gathers dust on the shelf
And can't articulate
But when the days are buzzing with the blue and green
And I'm honey-hum about you 'cause I'm full of bees
I don't wanna have to erase
Words that don't know their place
Or carry their own weight
Oh oh oh
I know I grow quiet
Oh oh oh
I don't know why
But I know the day is gonna come
When the cat will get my tongue
You only hear what I don't say
But I don't mean it anyway
Twist my arm and pull my leg
Get this song out of my head
Cross my eyes when we're apart
Stick a needle in heart
What can I say?
What can I say?

Yoga Zone
03:47
|
|||
Our youth was spent with faces bent
At right angles to everything
We'd circumvent the sick and malcontent
And choke it with a guitar string
Casio so sweet, there's bottles at our feet
To rattle with the drum machine
And our TV muse, so distracting as she moved
Through a New Age spandex routine
Two lit boys
Making big noise
Watching "Yoga Zone"
By then all of our friends
Were fighting their own bodies
In their own way
Either giving in
To the whims or the follies
Or keeping them at bay
Tape circled round, "Hey, how's this sound?"
Burned the devil down, didn't we?
On the TV set, down-dog silhouette
A star too far, a mystery
Having big fun
Hiding from the sun
Watching "Yoga Zone"
We are all too young
To focus on our breathing
Too numb to hold a pose
All things flow into one
But it leaves with the feeling
That you just missed the yoga zone

Something Left
03:47
|
|||
When you're driving
From Cleveland to Cincinnati
You roll back time on the 3-C Highway with me
Tracing geology
'Cause the ground gets older
Rock strata and segmentation
All the years of sedimentation
That led to my destination
Then all upended
By means twisted and timeless
And random acts of blindness
Unforeseen
Friends I should have talked to
Revelations missed
Days that I fought through
Dizzy with "what if"
The time I never took
The tree I never shook
They all had something left to give
Your 1995
Was someone's 1959
You both saw that summer light
Come alive
But time stays casual
When we're all just carbon-dating
Fossil fuels are waiting
In our bones
Friends I'll never talk to
Ideas will never stick
The certainty of solitude
The fall and then the lift
The time I'll never take
The hand that I'll foresake
They'll all have something left to give
This Midwest winter
That tricky sun is quick to sink
This Ohio son could use a drink
Or a whisper

Blackwater
05:31
|
|||
Daydrunk
A few shots across the bow, and Saturday's sunk
You thought you were above it, but you'll debunk
And deconstruct that theory
Daydrunk
All set
Inner tube in a river in the northwest
Of Florida and some dude just ate a cigarette
Cause someone dropped the matches and now they're wet
Daydrunk
It was easy enough
To get away with for a while
And all you had to do is
Play dumb
And go gently down the stream
Merrily, its sends you on your way
Between the evergreens
Head shrunk
Senses of proportion getting messed up
That girl was closer than I thought she was
Excuse the misperception
Daydrunk
It's called Blackwater
Gators slipping under when it gets hotter
Just float that cooler over, and pay no bother
They know well enough to stay away
Daydrunk
It was easy enough
To get away with for a while
But words get blurred and you can't
Say what
Any of it means
Anyway, life is but a dream
On a drunken day

The Day After I Mowed
05:13
|
|||
The day after I mowed
I can’t deny that my heart tingled
When I saw the grass so low
Dandelions intermingled
The day after I mowed
I thought that we could be forgiven
For darker days left by the road
In a bag with all the clippings
Oh oh, it'll always come back, I know
However low it's laid
So so, relax, feel the grass below
Between your toes, the broken blades
Taking all your cares away
For today
The day after I mowed
The marigolds were full and flawless
Flower beds lined with stone
I felt the hand of fate upon us
Oh oh, it'll always come back, I know
However low it's laid
So so, relax, feel the grass below
Between your toes, the broken blades
Taking all your cares away
For today
Now the dew in your eye
Only means that we’re still kicking
And it’s true that you and I
Will always have weeds for picking
Oh oh, it'll always come back, I know
However low it's laid
So so, relax, feel the grass below
Between your toes, the broken blades
Taking all your cares away
For today

I Know Where
03:10
|
|||
There was a moment when I owned
A peace of mind and didn't care
There was a moment
And then it wasn't there
This medicine I'm pouring in
Ain't near enough to get it done
Hides me for a little while
Until the nightmare comes
I see a shooter in the hallway
Probably feeling like you do
He'd run from what's inside of him
If he only could
And I know where I would run
Out of breath, I guess
Powerless and overcome
And I know where I would hide
"Hello, Angel of Death
Are you good and satisfied?"
And I know where I would
I know where I would
I know where I would hide
I know where I would
I know where I would
I can't disappear
But I know where I would hide
So I sat quiet in a cabinet
Held my breath behind the door
Protected by the randomness
And laminated boards
When he found me, he expounded
On the chip inside his head
Said he'd been miswired
Said he'd been misled
And he told me I was dreaming up
This game of hide-and-seek
All the world is dreaming
And we'll all die in our sleep
And I know where I would
I know where I would
I know where I would hide
I know where I would
I know where I would
I can't disappear
But I know where I would hide
I know where I would hide

Sister in the Air
04:07
|
|||
The "Whipper" cars tossed us everywhere
Crushed us on the curves in tiny pairs
I held on with a deathgrip, but her hands were in the air
The "Whipper" cars tossed us everywhere
Roller coaster rising to the sky
Watching my life flash before my eyes
Until I had to shut them, while hers were open wide
Roller coaster rising to the sky
At the top
Blind in my despair
She laughed at the drop
Like it wasn't even there
My sister in the air
Summer days at the city pool
You can climb back down that ladder like a fool
But on the high board she could hear the music
"Cruel, cruel, cruel"
Summer days at the city pool
From where she stood
It sounded like a dare
So she flew
While everybody stared
Little sister in the air
Birds can see magnetic fields
They say birds can see magnetic fields
And navigate the sky by secret wave and nerves of steel
Birds can see magnetic fields

Bliss
04:37
|
|||
The Lord said, "Let there be Marlboro Lights,
Early Times in our coffee cup"
He saw it was good or good enough
And he called it Monday morning
Again we're shivering in our winter skins
Whoever thought they'd wear so thin?
They barely keep out the wind as it howls
With fingers that prowl at our hearts
It's come to this
A quick reminisce
Long overdue for some heavenly bliss
The angels came down
But they're out on the town
They're only here for the kicks
Oh, the heavenly host gave up the ghost,
Set up shop on the Emerald Coast
Selling t-shirts, they sat on the shore
Watching the world as it burns
It's come to this
We look to a kiss
A swing and a miss, I bet
And heaven's too proud
To come down from the clouds
But don't count us out just yet
